Someone once told me, “You are like a walking air purifier—a rare person who comes around only once in a thousand!”
I smiled at those words. My personal experience with Mirror-Touch Synesthesia (MTS) has shaped the way I understand touch, empathy, and human connection.
When I meet people, I sometimes experience an intuitive awareness of their physical discomfort and emotional state. I have also experienced sensations during long-distance phone conversations. These experiences are part of my personal journey and the foundation of my Mirror Touch Massage practice.
Synesthesia is a perceptual phenomenon in which stimulation in one sensory or cognitive pathway is associated with an additional experience. There are different forms of synesthesia, including:
Mirror-touch synesthesia is a recognized form of synesthesia. My own experiences and the methods I have developed through training are personal and should not be taken as a description of every person with MTS.
Over time, I have explored breathing, meditation, mindful touch, and sensory awareness. Through continued practice, I developed my own approach to Mirror Touch Massage.
For example, when I encounter cigarette smoke, I may experience irritation in my nose and begin coughing. I have also had experiences in which I felt unusually aware of another person's condition during a conversation.
I understand these experiences through my own perspective and practice. I believe that compassion, careful observation, and a willingness to help others are valuable qualities for anyone who works with people.
Some people describe healing as a spiritual gift. For me, prayer and meditation are meaningful parts of my personal preparation. In massage practice, I also believe in respecting each client's needs, comfort, and individual experience.
Caregivers and massage professionals often work closely with people who are experiencing discomfort or emotional stress. Developing listening skills, sensory awareness, and compassionate communication can help practitioners offer more attentive care.
Through this column, I hope to share personal experiences from my Mirror Touch Massage practice and encourage readers to explore relaxation, breathing, and mindful self-care.
My guiding wish is: “May I be a ray of sunshine as we walk through a dark world.”
I am also the author of two books:
Thank you for reading. I wish you health, peace, and well-being!

Mirror-touch synesthesia
Two Efforts, One Moment of Breakthrough
Jultak Dongsi is a traditional East Asian expression describing a moment when two complementary efforts come together at precisely the right time.
Imagine a chick preparing to hatch. The chick pecks at the eggshell from inside, while the mother hen pecks from outside to help. The chick's effort is called Jul (啐), and the mother's effort is called Tak (啄). When their efforts meet at the right moment, the shell can break and the chick can emerge.
This image offers a beautiful lesson about timing, cooperation, and mutual support.
The expression is also used as a metaphor in Zen Buddhist teaching. A student works diligently toward understanding, while a teacher offers guidance at the moment it is most helpful.
The important idea is not that one person can force another to awaken. Rather, learning and growth may happen when personal effort and timely guidance come together.
I find this idea meaningful in Mirror Touch Massage. A massage session is a shared experience in which the practitioner and client each have an important role.
The practitioner brings training, attention, and appropriate touch. The client communicates their needs, shares feedback, and participates in the process of relaxation. Trust and clear communication help both people work together comfortably.
During a session, I may use gentle pressure, rubbing, tapping, or guided breathing, depending on the client's preferences and comfort. Some clients experience warmth, emotional release, or deep relaxation. Others may have a different experience.
These responses are individual, and they should not be interpreted as proof that blocked energy or meridians have physically opened. The client's comfort, consent, and safety always come first.
Imagine a stream blocked by a stone. When the obstacle is carefully moved, the water may flow more freely. In the same way, patient attention and cooperation can sometimes help a person feel more comfortable and relaxed.
For me, Jultak Dongsi represents the value of meeting another person at the right moment—with patience, awareness, and compassion.
Whether in massage, teaching, caregiving, or everyday relationships, meaningful change often begins when effort and understanding come together.

For me, Mirror Touch Massage is more than a physical experience. It is a personal healing ritual that brings together relaxation, focused attention, breathing, and a deep sense of connection between the practitioner and the client.
Before each session, I clean and ventilate the room and adjust the temperature to create a comfortable environment. I prepare meditation music or chimes. I also take a shower and spend time in meditation and healing dance to center myself before putting on my white massage gown. I encourage clients to arrive clean and comfortable for their session.
Before beginning, I offer a short prayer:
“May the energy of the universe connect with me. May I use my hands with care and compassion to support the client's comfort and well-being.”
We begin in the backyard, facing Bell Rock, where I guide the client through deep abdominal breathing. We then enter the massage room, and the client sits in a chair while I begin by observing and gently assessing the back and shoulders.
I pay close attention to areas that appear tense or uncomfortable. Depending on the client's needs and comfort, I may gently press, rub, or tap selected areas around the shoulders, the back of the neck, and the back.
During this process, I focus carefully on my hands and the client's responses. Sometimes I feel intuitively drawn to a particular area. I regard this as part of my personal experience and approach to Mirror Touch Massage.
After approximately 20–30 minutes of back work, we take a five-minute break. I wash my hands and prepare for the next stage, while the client may drink water and use the restroom if needed. Some clients report changes in their comfort or bodily sensations after a session; each person's experience is different.
Next, the client lies comfortably on the massage table. I explain the process before beginning any facial work and invite the client to tell me immediately if the pressure feels uncomfortable.
I ring a chime and invite the client to imagine the peaceful landscape of Bell Rock. I also use this image during my own breathing and meditation to help maintain a calm, focused presence.
As I gently massage the face, I pay attention to areas of tension and adjust my touch according to the client's feedback. At times, I may express emotion through a sigh, a hum, or a song. These moments are part of my personal practice and are not necessary for every client.
For me, Mirror Touch Massage is an opportunity to connect with another person through attentive touch, compassion, and respect. The session is most meaningful when both practitioner and client communicate openly and work together toward comfort and relaxation.
Massage is a shared experience that requires trust, appropriate boundaries, and attention to the client's needs. I feel grateful when a client leaves feeling more relaxed, supported, and at ease.
Over the years, I have had several memorable experiences while providing Mirror Touch Massage. The following two stories describe what my clients reported and what I observed during their sessions. These are personal accounts, not proof that massage can diagnose or cure a medical condition.
During a back massage for an American woman, I suddenly experienced a strong sensation of warmth moving from her back down through my legs. Afterward, she told me that she had also felt a sensation of warmth moving toward and out through her feet.
I asked her about her experience of body temperature and sweating. She said that she often felt hot but did not sweat very much.
Her description made me reflect on the relationship between bodily sensations, comfort, and temperature regulation. However, the cause of feeling unusually hot or sweating less cannot be determined through massage alone. Anyone experiencing persistent heat intolerance or unusual changes in sweating should consult a healthcare professional.
I encouraged her to discuss her symptoms with a healthcare professional and to choose gentle physical activity appropriate for her health. I also suggested that she try comfortable breathing exercises and avoid excessive heat exposure.
I once provided a massage to an older woman in her seventies. She told me that she had difficulty bending the fourth finger of her right hand, pain in her right knee, and swelling and pain in her right big toe. She also described her hands as frequently feeling cold.
After one massage session, she reported that her finger moved more easily, her knee and big toe felt better, and her hands felt warmer. Two days later, she contacted me again. She said that her pain had eased enough for her to sleep more comfortably.
I was pleased to hear about her experience. In my personal approach to Mirror Touch Massage, I pay close attention to areas of tension and the client's responses, and I am always interested in learning how clients feel after a session.
However, one person's improvement after massage does not establish the cause of the symptoms or prove that massage cured an underlying condition. Persistent joint pain, swelling, or restricted movement should be evaluated by an appropriate healthcare professional.
These experiences have strengthened my belief in the importance of attentive touch, careful observation, and listening to each client. Every person is different, and every session deserves patience, respect, and an individualized approach.
For me, the most rewarding part of Mirror Touch Massage is hearing that a client feels more comfortable, relaxed, or supported. I remain grateful for every opportunity to help someone experience greater ease and well-being.
Have you ever noticed that your hands and feet feel cold even when the rest of your body feels comfortable? Have you ever felt stiff after sitting still for a long time?
In my personal approach to wellness, I pay close attention to warmth, movement, breathing, and physical comfort. Although cold sensations are not the cause of all diseases, persistent coldness or unusual changes in body temperature can sometimes be worth discussing with a healthcare professional.
Blood circulation helps deliver oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. Blood vessels can narrow in response to cold temperatures, and this can reduce blood flow to the skin and extremities.
Regular physical activity supports cardiovascular health and can help people maintain mobility and comfort. Gentle movement, appropriate clothing, and a comfortably warm environment may also help when you feel cold.
Sweating is primarily the body's way of regulating temperature. It is not necessary to sweat every day to be healthy, and sweating more does not necessarily mean that the body is removing more toxins. The body processes and eliminates waste through organs such as the liver and kidneys.
1. Move your body regularly.
Try walking, gentle stretching, or other activities that suit your ability and health. Spending time outdoors in comfortable weather can be enjoyable, too. Protect your skin from excessive sun exposure and stay hydrated, especially in hot weather.
2. Choose comfortable warmth.
A warm bath or footbath may feel relaxing. Avoid excessively hot water, and take particular care if you have reduced sensation, circulation problems, or another condition that affects your response to heat.
3. Dress for the weather.
Warm socks, comfortable layers, scarves, hats, and other suitable clothing can help you stay comfortable when temperatures drop.
4. Pay attention to your environment.
Air conditioning can be useful in hot weather, especially in Sedona's desert climate. Adjust the temperature to remain comfortable rather than avoiding air conditioning altogether. Choose food and drinks at temperatures you enjoy.
5. Enjoy a varied, balanced diet.
Ginger, cinnamon, carrots, sweet potatoes, radishes, and sea vegetables can all be part of a varied diet. No single food can eliminate all illness, but balanced nutrition supports general health.
One aspect of my Mirror Touch Massage practice is paying close attention to areas where clients report tension, discomfort, or unusual sensations of coldness.
During a session, I use appropriate touch and pressure while checking the client's comfort. Some clients report feeling warmer or more relaxed afterward. Others may notice different sensations, because each person's experience is unique.
I do not regard these sensations as proof that toxins have been released or that a disease has been cured. Persistent numbness, cold extremities, swelling, or changes in skin color deserve appropriate medical attention.
Warmth, movement, rest, nourishing food, and compassionate touch can all have a place in a healthy daily routine.
My hope is that Mirror Touch Massage encourages people to pay attention to their bodies, listen to their needs, and make time for relaxation and self-care.
Health is Wealth. Touch Is Connection.
Health Is Wealth. Touch Is Connection.
